Visual Primer is a fixed-width, neo-grotesk typeface inspired by the 1973 book A Primer of Visual Literacy (Donis A. Dondis), and the work of designer Muriel Cooper (1925–1994). The letterforms, based on the IBM Selectric Composer proportional sans-serif used to set the text of the book, have been converted into a set of monospace fonts — the first (A) with rectangular punctuation and the second (B) with circular punctuation. The set are a counterpoint to the original proportional sans-serif, which was adapted for the pre-digital IBM Composer and did not include an italic (hand-drawn underlines were used instead for emphasis). Visual Primer has 112 glyphs with basic Latin characters, lining figures, punctuation, and symbols. License includes 2 styles: Grotesk A, and Grotesk B, with Desktop (OTF), Web (WOFF), and App (TTF) font formats for Print, Web, App, and Broadcast use. The Desktop (OTF) format is available to request/use free for self-initiated, non-profit, and cultural projects. Typeface designed by Jonathan Maghen. Licensed fonts distributed via e-mail. EULA.
